MCHD Tobacco Program Activities
In this excerpt from an upcoming episode of "Health Three60" titled "Clearing the Smoke," community members in Magoffin County talk about their decision to put an anti-smoking message on a tobacco barn near the Mountain Parkway in Eastern Kentucky.
Cooper Clayton Smoking Cessation Classes:
Classes are held at the health department once a week for twelve weeks. The group meets one hour each week and the classes are conducted by a facilitator trained in the Cooper Clayton Method. Participants must attend the class in order to be eligible to receive the NRT patches through the health department at a reduced rate.
- For the first two weeks of attendance, the participant will pay $20 each week toward the purchase of the NRT patches.
- For the second two weeks of attendance the participant will pay $10 each week toward the purchase of the NRT patches.
- For the third two weeks of attendance the participant will pay $5 each week toward the purchase of the NRT patches.
- After the sixth week of attendance, the patches will be free to the participant until the end of the 12 week session.
Classroom Education:
“TNT” (Toward No Tobacco) classes are taught to 5th graders at each elementary school. Each class is taught by trained peer educators. The classes consist of five lessons and are designed to give students information on the risks and consequences of using any tobacco product.
MCHD Tobacco Coalition:
The Magoffin County Health Coalition consist of representation from various community organizations, faith based services and concerned citizens of Magoffin County. The coalition’s main goal is to educate and build capacity for smoke-free policy.
The Magoffin County Health Department obtained a federal grant to educate the public about the dangers of second hand smoke and to eventually pass a law/ordinance to make public places and work places smoke free. We have ads on the shopping carts in the two Family Dollar Stores in Salyersville. These ads are working toward that goal.
